A desktop application is a stand-alone software that runs on a desktop or laptop computer. Whereas, a web-based application requires the web browser to run. Why would anyone create a desktop application? Any existing web application is probably suited to becoming a desktop app. You could build it around any web application that would benefit from integration in the user’s system. Think native notifications, launching on startup, interacting with files, etc. Some users simply prefer having certain apps there permanently on their machine, accessible whether they have a connection or not.
